Dear Eddie’s Wheels:

I just wanted to let you know that the cart has been a complete success!

When we first got it, we took it (and him!) to Dr. Bak, so she could put him in it and make any necessary adjustments. I have to tell you, she was INCREDIBLY impressed! She didn’t make A SINGLE adjustment! She told us that it was the most well fitted cart she’d ever seen. (We have since lowered the back by just about 1/2 inch. It seemed that the saddle was putting a little too much pressure on him, because sometimes he had trouble peeing. Whenever that happened, if we actually lifted his legs, he would literally explode. We’re not exactly clear on what’s going on there, although lowering the saddle has helped a bit.)

Anyway, I was quite apprehensive at first. Tigger is quite the sensitive little guy. He gets scared and upset pretty easily, ESPECIALLY when he’s being forced to do something. (He is ALL terrier! :-))

When Dr. Bak put him in the cart, before she even had him strapped him, he tried to start running! As soon as she was done, he took off, his tail wagging all the way down the hallway!

HE LOVES IT!!! He immediately realized that the cart represented freedom, and he absolutely loves being in it. Whenever we put him in his cart, his tail goes up, and his entire mood changes for the better. He really understands what having the cart means.

Tigger loves his Eddie's Wheels

We’re steadily increasing the amount of time he stays in the cart. At this point we’ll letting him stay in it for about 15-20 minutes at a time, as long as he doesn’t get tired.

I thought you might like to see him, so I’ve attached a couple of pictures of Tigger in his cart. As I said, the settings were just about perfect, and you can see that he’s is standing perfectly straight while he’s in it.

At this point, we’re keeping his feet down. He struggles too much when we put them in the stirrups. We have booties that protect his feet from dragging, so it’s not a problem, and he’s much more comfortable that way.

Anyway, I wanted to thank you for providing us with such a terrific cart and for the care that went into adjusting it for him!

Thanks again

The Karas Family and Tigger!

A testimonial from a client who has tried 3 different carts! She got it right the last time – with Eddie’s Wheels!

When my Dachshund became disabled from ruptured disks and 2 surgeries that were not successful, I was lost and devastated. I had never been faced with a situation like this. I didn’t even know there was such a thing as a wheelchair for a dog… So I went on a search to find him one.

I was very unsuccessful and lost a lot of money.. I first tried one I discovered online from doxicart, and that wheelchair was also made specifically for my dog’s measurements. When I got it, it was just awful. He really couldn’t even use it.

This is the one of the Doxicart. I had to completely tear this whole harness apart and re-sew it to keep it up.. My husband had to take the wheels off and grind wheel frame down so I could lower the back to fit him right... Only way to adjust. What a disaster... The seat is attached with plastic tie wraps.

So I looked into Handicappedpets.com and read and read and read. I thought that since this cart was so adjustable in every way, this was the one for me. So I finally purchased one from them. When it came it took me days to just put it together. It came with a video so I watched it several times. I finally got it put together to fit Barney. The first thing I noticed is how heavy it was. The box it came in says it is only 3 pounds. Well, that right there is the first “non-truth”… Barney’s Walkin Wheels cart weighs over 4 pounds (I weighed it). The next thing is it comes with a harness that you have to put on the dog first and then put your dog into the cart and then connect the harness onto the frame. And if you are not really careful, you can pinch him which I did and really felt bad. That made him not want to even get into it anymore.

When I first put him in it, he just stood and looked at me like he was froze in it and he looked scared. I couldn’t even get him to go for a little walk with me at all. All and all, he just hated his cart. It was so heavy for him to pull. He looked like he was trying to pull a wagon, a heavy wagon. When he would start to walk in it he would have to use both his front legs together to literally hop to get started and he would be so out of breath by the time he made just a few steps.

Dragging this cart earned it the nickname of "The Anchor". The harness would not stay up without being tied on with a shoelace.

The most aggravating thing was the harness that went around his chest. He could only make a few steps and the strap would fall down around his legs and he couldn’t move. I tried so many adjustments like changing the belly strap and making it higher upon his chest until it was almost around his throat and it still wouldn’t stay up. I called Handicapped Pets and she told me there was another Dachshund that had one of their carts and he had the same trouble. I was told to tie a SHOE LACE from the front strap to the back strap that went across his shoulders. That also did not work.. She told me that they had their designers redesigning that harness so it would not fall down and I was put on a waiting list. (which I am sure I will never get a call).

Their carts are the same prices of Eddie’s Wheels carts, and Walkin Wheels are made in CHINA. So I started looking again on the internet and I found Eddie’s Wheels. Right off I I really loved the look of them, the way they were built and especially how they went around the shoulders.. I called Eddie’s Wheels and even asked if they had any problems with the strap falling down around the legs. She said “oh no, our carts cannot do that”.

I talked to my husband about purchasing yet another cart for our little Barney. Since this was going to be my THIRD cart I had already spent almost $500.00 at that point on carts, so I was reluctant to purchase another one. So my wonderful husband told me to go ahead and get it for him and when the cart came I was soooooooo impressed. I only had to make very minor adjustments to it, I put Barney in it and he just really took off. From taking it out of the box to putting Barney in it was only a very few minutes. Now when he walks he don’t have to hope on his front legs to get the cart moving and he is just so much more comfortable in Eddie’s Wheels. We walked twice as far today and he didn’t give out like he did in Walkin Wheels.

Lightweight, easy to use, dog approved - Barney's finally on a ROLL!

I would very, very highly recommend if you are looking for a wonderful wheelchair for your pet, purchase an Eddie’s Wheels wheelchair. It will save you a whole lot of aggravation for you and your pet if you purchase yours from Eddie’s Wheels. You will LOVE it. I call Barney’s cart now his “Cadillac… ” Thank you so very much Eddie’s Wheels.

Leslie,
I am very overdue at reporting in on Katie and her Eddie’s wheels…sorry! The quick answer is that she LOVES them!!! Katie’s whole face lights up and body starts wiggling “big time” when she sees her wheels as she knows she’s about to go for a spin. I guess the hospital even used Katie to encourage other dogs to use their wheels and soon she had them racing the halls with her! Yay Katie…nothing gets her down for long and she brings out the best in everyone… :-)

My husband and I (both architects) are very impressed at how incredibly well made/designed and light Katie’s Eddie’s wheels are compared to the Walking Wheels. I am thrilled because it is much easier to get Katie in and out. :-) At this point she can stay in them for about 2 hours at a stretch depending on what we are doing. Now Joseph (our son) and I want to invent a cushion so she can lay down while she’s in her wheels and then be able to stay in them for longer. We may need to invest in booties as well as the sidewalks/streets are getting hot with the season changes.

We had a gorgeous Spring day on Palm Sunday so we went for a family walk on a local walking/biking trail. I brought my camera and took a couple short videos which I’ve put together into one video and posted it on the Katie’s Flickr set. http://www.flickr.com/photos/wheatenphotos/sets/72157625830695193/with/5408167161/ This time my handsome assistant is my husband, Gary as Joseph was happily flying ahead on his scooter. We met all sorts of people and their pups and I have to say I was very impressed as most dogs weren’t phased by Katie’s wheels. The owners were a bit more hesitant and even apologetic with their curiosity. We spoke with one couple at length as the woman said she had just seen something on TV about carts for animals and was fascinated to see one in person. She was amazed at how natural and happy Katie appeared. This past Saturday we took Katie to Petsmart were she continued to be a great ambassador for “paw challenged” dogs. We love spreading the word about Eddie’s Wheels!

Leslie,

I just want to let you know how Galahad is doing with his cart. This is the 1st anniversary of Galahad having his cart. Since he got his cart he has missed very few days walking in the park and those were due to inclement weather. As you can see from the attached picture he loves it. In the winter we walk 1 ¼ miles each day. Once the temperature reaches about 70 we walk ¾ of a mile.

He uses the cart so much that he is on his 2nd set of tires. He wore the 1st down to the reinforcing wire. I replaced them at the beginning of December.

When he walks with my other dogs he has to lead the pack. The cart has allowed him to maintain his alpha status.

A side benefit of the cart is that it provides exercise to his weak back legs. He has gained enough strength in them that during the warm months he can stand up enough to walk short distances in the house.

Galahad is 11 and I am hoping that he will be able to wear out another set of tires. Last summer he was diagnosed with oral melanoma which appears to be in remission after a series of vaccines.

Thanks,

Melanie I Jennings

I don’t know why I haven’t written this a long time ago, but my middle name is LATE explaining many things. I can’t thank you all enough for the cart you made for Hannah. Her hygroma is no longer ulcerated, and the asymmetrical leg holes have worked perfectly so that she does not rub on it while she is in her cart. I know I expressed some concern about the narrower wheel base, but she doesn’t tip as much in this cart as she did in the second one she had. She’s had a cart for five years now, but every time I place her in it and watch her run with the other dogs I have to smile again. I am an avid proponent for handicapped animals and will put you at the top of my list to whom to refer.

Thank you again!!

Eddie’s Wheels carts are the only carts that I recommend for my patients, the only one that I recommends to vets / surgeons and the only ones that I use with my own dogs. I have been an avid supporter for over 5 years. Prior to my first experience with Eddie’s Wheels carts, I had the opportunity to work with other brand name carts as well as some homemade carts. In the last year, I’ve also had the opportunity to work with 2 brand name adjustable axis carts and was not satisfied with either. By far, there is no comparison between other carts and Eddie’s Wheels in terms of quality, durability, and proper support of the dog. Specifically, no other cart provides the spinal positioning and support that I look for with dogs with disk disease and other neurological conditions affecting the spine.

To date, I’ve used Eddie’s Wheels hind end carts, neutral balanced carts, counterbalanced carts, ones with training wheels, quad carts and front end carts. I’ve had patients that have refused to walk in other brand carts or that weren’t getting the right support with other carts switch over to an Eddie’s Wheels cart with immediate positive results.

I am completely satisfied with the entire process with Eddie’s Wheels carts from measuring a dog to the final fitting. Any questions or concerns with a particular dog are immediately answered by the Eddie’s Wheels staff.

To the Gang at Eddie’s Wheels:

“We just love the cart and so does Redford. When we go for a walk now with our other two corgis Redford keeps up and is part of the team. He runs in the cart and is happy as can be. He also got into a bit of an altercation with a yellow lab which indicates he is back to his old self again.

You all did a great job with the cart and we can’t thank you enough.”

We get letters like this all the time from happy owners of corgis with degenerative myelopathy. These charming, but stubbornly independent little dogs are usually well into their middle age (10 or over) when the first telltale symptoms of DM show up. First it’s thetoenails scraping on the sidewalk, then listing to one side and occasional stumbling and collapse in one rear leg. Most people have never heard of degenerative myelopathy, and since there is no medicine or treatment for it, it’s not on radar screens of many family vets. Once torn ACL’s, disc disease and spinal tumors are ruled out, the challenging diagnosis of degenerative myelopathy forces pet guardians to come to terms with the fact that their dog has the canine version of ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, an incurable neurologic disease. There is now a DNA test for this disease given at the University of Missouri Vet School – visit www.caninegeneticdiseases.net

When we first became aware of DM, we were as devastated as our clients were. But the indomitable spirit of the dogs themselves moved us past tragedy to triumph. If these dogs weren’t feeling sorry for themselves, then we need not pity them – we need to help them have the best quality of life as possible for as long as possible. We have worked with DM support groups to come up with a complete line of carts that address the progression of the disease as it moves forward into the front legs.

Redford, pictured here, has a neutral balanced cart that is weightless on his shoulders and totally supports and stabilizes his rear. As long he’s able, he can use his rear legs to help propel himself. As he loses function in his legs, they can be held up in rolling stirrups. If the disease progresses into his forelimbs, a counterbalance upgrade will take more weight off his front legs and give him several more months of life and mobility. You can read more about DM on our dedicated page on this website and watch the videos featured there.

I was just looking up your link again to recommend to someone on my GSD list and thought I would take this time to thank you for “Wheels” My Skyler who turned 13 has been on borrowed Wheels for about 6 months. We actually are using the wheels you made for Destiny the Shepherd on your website being measured. My Skyler who is still walking and active but had started getting wobbly in the backend so we started using the wheels for long walks or dog shows she would go to with me and the younger dogs. I LOVE them and they became even more appreciated when she had a vestibular attack about 3 months ago. We get comments and questions wherever we go and have recommended Eddie’s Wheels to many.

Hi!

I thought I would share a couple pictures of Mark in his wheels at the Flatcoat club picnic. He was running around without his wheels for part of the day, then started to get sore and would have had to miss out on more playing if he didn’t have his wheels. We popped him in his cart and he played [and ran over toes!] for a few more hours until it was time to go home. =)

All my hopes,

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you folks for the wheels and its obvious comfort. Boomer was kind of hesitant at first about using the wheels but now he runs around with them without a problem. The stirrups are a little useless now because he won’t keep his legs up considering he HAS USE OF HIS LEGS NOW. The neuro-vet said he wasn’t going to use them again but surprise…a pie right in his face! It’s slow going and he obviously needs some more physical therapy in the wheels but I’m sure he’ll be back to normal in no time at all.
