Recycled carts, rentals, and donations to rescues

Our mobility carts are so well made and durable that they are often in excellent condition when they are no longer needed by the original animal.  We receive requests for discounted carts on a daily basis from people with limited ability to pay for a new cart, and from rescue groups and humane organizations.   We are also moved by stories of animals abused and neglected who are in need of mobility assistance.

In order to meet our customers need to recycle their used carts, and to meet the needs of needy,  we offer our cart recycling program.  Eddie’s Wheels will pay for the return shipping of any Eddie’s Wheels cart.  These  wheelchairs are stocked and categorized by size, and whenever possible we sell used carts at a fraction (usually half)  of the cost of a new cart to needy people and organizations.  Very often we’ll refurbish, repad and reconfigure the balance of the wheelchair for the new customer.  Sometimes we can alter a cart that was built for a boxer, and fit it for a much smaller dog.  We can change axles from counterbalance to standard or vice versa, to meet the needs of a new dog.   When we sell recycled carts, we are re-couping our investment in shipping, parts and labor to make the used cart as good as new.  This, in turn, allows us to make outright donations when possible.  All used carts sold by us come with a new cart, lifetime of the dog, warranty.

Hunter is able to rent a used cart to recover from a traumatic and temporary loss of mobility

Our supply of used carts also allows to provide short-term rentals to dogs who will only have a temporary need for wheels – such as dogs recovering from ACL surgery,  spinal compressions and tick borne paralysis.

We recently received a tiny cart   just in time to provide a free cart to a little dog in rescue at the Animal Welfare League of Chicago.  We built and sent a free cart to Russia for a dog that had been grotesquely abused and whose case became a sensation in St. Petersburg, changing the laws governing cases of animal abuse.  We built a custom cart for a pitbull who had been rescued by a military family whose owner was going a third tour of duty in the Middle East.   We always offers discounts to rescue groups and shelters, animal hospitals and sanctuaries when we have to build new carts.  We are able to do this because of the generosity of the our previous clients who allow us to re-sell their carts.

Here is a wonderful example:  A man calls with an 11 year old boxer with DM and tells us that he has been unemployed for 2 years due to the contraction of the economy.  He wants to provide his beloved dog with the assistance she needs but he cannot afford a new cart.

He gives us his dog’s dimensions and we look on the deck and find a perfect cart for his dog.   It is a perfect match….. and it had only arrived back here the day before.  The original owner is delighted that his dog’s wheelchair is saving another dog’s life, and everyone, especially the boxer, is delighted.

Eddie’s Wheels is also committed to the concept of recycling goods.  We don’t like to think of our carts being sent to landfills when they could be helping another dog.  We are always happy to sell a used cart rather than build a new one in an effort to conserve precious resources.  We are committed to creating a community of caring dog lovers who can rest assured that their pet’s wheelchair is helping someone else’s best friend, even after they are gone.

hi, this is a wonderful idea…I rescue and have a chi who was rescued from the streets of S.Korea. He is in Canada now looking for his forever home. His front legs are deformed, the vets think could have been from being broken and left to heal that way or he was born with them like that..who knows. Anyways he is in need of a front wheel cart and I have downloaded the measurement form and its all filled in etc..we are trying to raise the funds, but was hoping and praying if he would be able to get one of the donated ones, even at a low cost as that would help so much..thanks and look forward to hearing from you.

      Hello Sue,

As front wheelers are so specialized, we do not have used front wheel carts. But, as mentioned in the blog entry, we do offer a discount to rescue groups.

I am hoping you may have one that has been donated as I know how exspensive this must be and I know I will not be able the cost. Please help Cody get around he is other wise preaty healthy. I am afraid I will have to put him down because I can’t help him. I love him so much and is the last dog I will ever be able to have do to it is to hard when they die I don’t know if I can put Cody down I have been crying for three days over it. I had him at the vet today & he said it is his back legs he is in good shape otherwise. I was sure he would say it was time to let go. He said if he could walk he would be good for a while. Please I am sure you get alot of these I am on Soc Sec/SSI & food stamps. I try to buy food that we both can eat as my monthly income is less than $700.00 a month. I wish I could afford ins. for Cody. I will send you proff of my income if you need it. I sure hope you can help Cody. God bless you for these carts. I know you are in bussiness to make money and you told Matthew to go ahead and measure his dog. Does that mean you go ahead and charge his card?

    Thank You:

If we have a donated used cart that is the right size for your dog, I will be happy to pass it on to you. We need the dog’s measurements and then we’ll look and see what is possible.

    Hi
I was interested in maybe some used wheelchair parts. Is that an option. If so I am interested in prices. If not I am interested is the price of a used wheelchair for a 50-55lbs dog.
    Thank you
    Chrystina

We do not sell parts, but we would be happy to discuss the possibility of a used cart. Send us your pet’s measurements and we’ll see if we have something that fits.

    • leslie June 21, 2011 at 4:05 pm #

We don’t sell parts. If you are interested in a used cart, you would need to measure your dog and then I’ll see if I have something the right size for you.

    • leslie June 22, 2011 at 9:27 pm #

We don’t normally sell parts. If you’re interested in a used cart, please provide us with your dog’s measurements, according to the measurement chart on the website, and we’ll see if we have one the right size. Generally used carts are about half the price of a new cart.

It has been our experience that when an elderly cat loses its mobility, he has other health issues that make getting a wheelchair unrealistic. However, if this cat really is healthy and motivated, a cart is a viable option. We do not have many used cat carts in stock, but send us the cat’s measurements and we’ll see if something is available.

    Hi
Hope 4 Paws Dog Rescue in Illinois currently has a 11 week old beagle mix puppy unable to walk due to complications of Parvo and meningitis. Long term health prognosis and chance of adoption is dim unless we can outfit her with a wheelchair. She currently weighs 7 lbs. and will most likely reach 20-25 lbs full grown. Do you have anything used that could help her? We are paying off a $4,000 vet bill for her and her brother and she is still undergoing treatment. We would appreciate any assistance we could get for our beloved Kennedy.

Is she healthy enough now for a cart? Try taking her measurements now, and we’ll check our stock of used carts – if there’s one available that is a reasonable fit for now with some room to grow, we’ll donate it. If we have to build, we’ ll do our best to discount it with funds from our Buddy Fund.

The vet believes her to be healthy enough to start using one now. They advised us that lying down all day puts her at risk for pneumonia as well as bed sores. She wants so badly to get up and cries in frustration at times. Otherwise her tail beats a mile a minute. I will get her measurements to you as soon as possible. Thank you so very much for your help.

I am looking for wheels for my shepherd mi but cannot afford much due to unemployment issues. Do you know of anyone that no longer needs them that might strike a bargain with me?

    • leslie January 14, 2012 at 8:05 pm #

We have some used carts here and are happy to sell them for the price of refurbishing it for your dog – IF we have the right size in stock. So send us your dog’s measurements, and we’ll see what’s possible.

I have a 3 yr old chihuahua that has recently become paralized in his lower half due to a enflamed disk in his back. We are not sure how he will do with a cart but really want to try one to improve his quality of life. Do you have a used one we could rent for a while to see how he does with it? If yes I will send in the order form with his measurements.

    • leslie November 10, 2012 at 3:27 pm #

If we have a used cart for you to try-out, we can do this, but we cannot build new carts as rentals. Most disc dogs love their wheels and adapt almost instantly to using them….take a look at all the videos on our youtube.com channel to see many dogs in their first minutes of being put in their carts.

If you measure her, we might have a used cart instock that might fit her. Follow the directions on our website about how to measure. If you live in Hawaii, shipping a cart for a large dog is very expensive.

I have a 14 year old fox terrier/rat terrier she had bad knees when she was young. At the time she was my sister -in laws dog .She had the operation to correct her problem. unfortunately my sister-in law passed and I inherited Pookey. She has been my dog for the past 7 years. Yesterday, I took her outside and she was having a bowel movement and made a little yelping noise and that was it,she has not stepped down on her foot since. Did I mention she is also blind. This poor dog my heart just breaks for her. I cannot afford any kind of operation, so , I am looking for options to make her comfortable for the time she has left. Can you recommend anyone who donates or a cheaper alternative? I just don’t think she is ready for doggy heaven

    Thanks,
    Joanie Budicak

I would talk to your vet about what is causing her pain and deal with the pain issues. Many small dogs will recover from knee injuries with the use of anti-inflammatories and pain medication.
