A Cart for a Disabled Alpaca

Ben was paralyzed as a result of contracting meningeal worms. His legs are in spastic paralysis and are fixed in a flexed position. In order to accommodate this, Ed made a special saddle that would easy for him to get in and out of, and we put plastic fenders over the wheels to rest his legs on. Ben’s cart has 20” wheels that are raked at an angle for stability.

Ben's Story

Unable to stand on his own, Ben looks out longingly to the barnyard while his herd looks in on him. Rene and Ed used a hay bale to rest his rump on before lifting his legs into the saddle. Then the yoke was closed and locked and the chest strap fastened.
Ben took right off into the field, and headed out to visit his friends. There was definitely a little showing-off going on here.
It was great to hang out with the herd and be one of the guys again. Eddie and Ben
Ben took off for the horizon again.
As a result of the University of Massachusetts program in alpaca ranching, another young alpaca disabled by meningeal worms has acquired renewed mobility with a cart from Eddie’s Wheels.
